Re: Ocean green machine
Friday, July 30, 2010
We learn lots of things from the video. We learn that the ocean is full of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is the bottom of the marine food web. Phytoplankton produce half of the oxygen produced on Earth. phytoplankton stores some carbon-containing chemical compound for an indefinite period. Phytoplankton need nutrients to grow. It got its nutrients from cold water that carry nutrients from the ocean's lower depths to the surface of the ocean. Researchers study the phytoplankton from space. More phytoplankton are dying each year so more carbon dioxide are not absorbed by phytoplankton so the ocean becomes more acidic which is a danger to sea creatures. Less food is produced.

Re:Green Machines
There are numbers of other pigments that also is present in some plants. Some of these, such as Arytenoids and Xanthophylls. They don't replace the chlorophyll, but they can help it do its job more better. These other pigments absorb light in different areas of the light spectrum than chlorophyll does, thus widening the range over which plants can extract energy from light. They don't directly do the same things that chlorophyll can do, but they can give the energy they extract from light to chlorophyll molecules, helping them do their work. Usually, these accessory pigments are yellow, orange or red and this color gets masked by the green of the chlorophyll, but some you can see the leaves in different colour. One very important function of some of these secondary pigments is to act as a form of protection for chlorophyll molecules against the free radicals which can be formed within the cells under strong light. In cases where this happens, the red or violet color of the secondary pigment can visually overpower the green color of the chlorophyll and the plant will appear red or purple. A lot of the plants we grow in aquariums have colored leaves because they were breed that way or the color is due to a (non-harmful) virus. There is a plant virus which can infect some species of plants and cause the leaves to lose the ability to produce chlorophyll in certain areas. This is seen most often in Hygrophila.

What would happen if there were no photosynthesis?

If there is no photosynthesis, the provision of oxygen by trees would be lost and it would lead to the increasing the degree of global warming. If there is no photosynthesis, plants would not be able grow and then there wont be a balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When there is an excess of carbon dioxide in th air, we will all die. And there isn't anything to produce or supply more oxygen to the atmosphere, we living things wouldn't be able to survive as there is a lack of oxygen.

Photosynthesis is important for plants only?

The plant is known for only living organism to produce their own food during photosynthesi. This process is important because other animals who do no produce their own food need to feed on plants to get energy. Basically, photosynthesis is very important because the food or energy it produces is one of the main reason why we survived. Photosynthesis also plays an important role in converting CO2 back in to O2 so that humans and animals can breathe photosynthesis uses sunlight to transform sugars up and down the chloroplast has chlorophyll in it which makes it greem plants have a stomota which is tiny pores in leaves that perform many functions for plants.

Our intial theory : Photosynthesis makes food for plants, so that they can respire. Respiration breaks down food into energy which is used in photosynthesis. Phtotsynthesis and respiration works together to ensure there is a balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air.

A better theory : Photosynthesis provides the plant with the neccessary energy used in respiration.

Q: Why study photosynthesis?
A: Photosynthesis provides oxygen, so it os an essantial item towards playing a major role in making sure the Earth is not affectedby thr greenhouse effect.

Q: What is the importance of photosynthesis?
A: It is to control the amount of gases tht are in the air. Photosynthesis is the process of producing oxygen in the air. It also takes in carbon dioxide. So there will not be unequal number of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air. (: Because our quality of life, and indeed our very existence, depends on photosynthesis.

Q: How will photosynthesis affect us?
A: Photosynthesis
is the process which oxygen is produced. It is essential for us as it helps to keep us alive. If there is no photosynthesis, plants will die, when that happens, the whole food chain will be disrupted. We would eventually die because there is not enough oxygen and food for us to take in.
Q: What would happen if there were no photosynthesis?
A: If there was no photosynthesis, no more oxygen would be would be produce by trees which would lead in the increase in the temperature of Earth which is global warming. If the temperature of the Earth increases, the sea level would rise. There would be also no more food for us as plants produce glucose through photosynthesis.

Q: Photosynthesis important for plants only?
A: Photosynthesis is a process that convert carbon dioxide to sugars, oxygen and other organic compound by using energy by the sunlight. Photosynthesis is important for plant as it was use to make food for the plant and produce oxygen for plants.Photosynthesis is also use to produce oxygen for other living things and the plant in the plant is food for the herbivores and the omnivores which would be eaten by carnivores or omnivores.

Q: A Plant needs its own food to function. It can't really make its own food at night. Beyond a few hours of darkness, can a plant stay alive without light?
A: Yes. The plant uses its stored starch and change it to glucose to use it for respiration in the plants.
